Back It Up, Bestie

ZOMG, here's the thing about OnSong: your entire music library lives right there on your device. Which means you can totally jam out in a dingy dive bar with zero WiFi, a concert hall drowning in Bluetooth chaos, or literally the jungle, & OnSong will keep hummin\u{2019} along like a champ. No internet? No problem, bestie.

Why Even Bother Backin\u{2019} Up?

Look, storing everything locally is amazing, but let\u{2019}s be real—peeps lose iPads all the bleepin\u{2019} time. Stolen. Lost. Left on top of the tour van & scraped off Highway 40. Or worse, lil\u{2019} Timmy deletes the app by accident, or you factory-reset your iPad & WHOOPS there goes everything. So yeah. Backup. Now.

How to Actually Do the Thing

Here\u{2019}s the good news: makin\u{2019} a backup in OnSong is embarrassingly easy. First, we super-duper recommend backin\u{2019} up to Dropbox so your stuff lives somewhere safe off your device. Then when disaster strikes (& it will), you can restore everything from Dropbox with WiFi & your login creds. Head over to Dropbox to get the 411 on signin\u{2019} up & hookin\u{2019} it up in OnSong.

Ready? Go smack the Do Stuff Menu & tap Save My Life, Please to open the Backup screen. Pick where you want it, name it somethin\u{2019} cute, & set up auto-backups so you\u{2019}ll never "forget" again. (Spoiler: you will forget. We\u{2019}ll do it for ya.)

What Actually Goes in There?

Your backup file is a ZIP bomb full of your entire OnSong library. We slap a .backup file extension on it so OnSong knows what\u{2019}s up.

Inside you\u{2019}ll find the OnSong database (OnSong.sqlite3), all your imported files, plus your music, images, help docs, & a special prefs file that remembers every single tweak you made. It\u{2019}s like a time capsule of your bad taste in fonts & color schemes.

How to Bring It Back From the Dead

So you\u{2019}ve got your backup tucked away safely. Now let\u{2019}s resurrect it. Spoiler: it\u{2019}s literally just importing a file.

Pop into the Songbook & tap Every. Single. Song. Hit the import button (bottom right) to get to the Add Some Jams screen. Pick Dropbox. Find your backup file & import it like a boss.

When you pick your backup to restore, OnSong will be like "Yo, this is gonna totally overwrite everything you got right now. You cool with that?" If you say yes, it downloads & restores, & your library goes back to how it was. Magical.

Note: Backup files are ZIP-compressed copies of your OnSong library folder. They can get up to like 4 GB, which is totes fine.
